Athletics, other programs benefit from road race

ATTLEBORO - Student athletes and former high school dropouts working to complete their education were the big winners in the Rome Boulevard Road Race sponsored annually by Attleboro teachers and auto dealer Al Cerrone.

Teacher and race organizer Jim Hawkins presented a $4,500 check to the school committee to aid needy students with sports user fees and $1,000 to the Attleboro Evening Diploma Program for students who need help with tuition.

Additional proceeds from the race went to the Rebeckha Whitefield Foundation for local youth activities and OneFAN for its annual Christmas dinner for the needy.

High school students designed and printed flyers for the race, designed a commemorative T-shirt and helped staff the event.

The race received additional support from the Attleboro Police Running Team, city firefighters and city hall and school employees. Bristol County Savings Bank, The Sun Chronicle, Drivers Choice Driving School, DB Sports, Sodexho, Whitsons Food Service, Attleboro Jewelers, Bluefish Swim Club, Houghton Physical Therapy, School To Career Partnership, and the Wampanoag Road Runners also sponsored the race. Briggs Corner Pizzeria provided a pizza party for the top-finishing Attleboro High Cross Country team and BJ's and Seabra donated food for the event.
